Photonics R&D Scientist

Job description

Role Overview

We are seeking a PhD-level Photonics R&D Scientist to drive the research, characterization, and advancement of silicon photonics integrated circuits. This role is highly research-oriented and focuses on device physics, experimental validation, and next-generation photonic technology development, rather than routine testing.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong academic research foundation in photonics, optoelectronics, or semiconductor physics, with hands-on experience in advanced photonic device characterization and experimental design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research & Device Physics

    • Conduct in-depth experimental research on active and passive silicon photonic devices to understand device behavior, performance limits, and failure mechanisms.

    • Provide physics-based insights and recommendations to guide device design optimization and technology development.

  • Design Verification & Experimental Validation

    • Define and execute advanced design verification and validation methodologies to assess photonic device performance at wafer and die levels.

    • Correlate experimental results with simulation and theoretical models.

  • Advanced Device Characterization

    • Perform comprehensive optical and electrical characterization (DC/AC, high-speed, wavelength-dependent measurements).

    • Lead complex optical alignment, probing, and measurement setups for research-grade experiments.

  • Data Analysis & Modeling

    • Develop custom scripts and analysis tools for post-processing large experimental datasets.

    • Extract meaningful trends and insights to support R&D decision-making.

  • Test & Experimental Setup Development

    • Design, build, and continuously improve research-grade optical and electrical test setups.

    • Specify, source, and qualify advanced laboratory equipment to support R&D objectives.

  • Collaborative R&D

    • Work closely with design, process, integration, and system teams to translate research findings into scalable photonic technologies.

    • Contribute to publications, patents, and internal technology roadmaps.

Ideal Requirements

  • Education

    • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Photonics, or Semiconductor Physics
(PhD is mandatory for this role)

  • Core Technical Expertise

    • Strong hands-on experience in photonic device characterization (active & passive devices).

    • Deep understanding of guided-wave optics, photonic device physics, and optoelectronic principles.

    • Proven capability in optical alignment, electrical probing, and high-precision experimental measurements.

    • Experience designing and maintaining custom experimental and characterization setups.

  • Research-Oriented Skills

    • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to connect experimental results to theory and simulation.

    • Experience working in research labs, advanced R&D teams, or university-industry collaborations.

  • Additional Advantage

    • Background in silicon photonics, 3D sensing, LiDAR, optical interconnects, or autonomous sensing systems.

    • Experience with compound semiconductors, organic materials, or hybrid photonic integration.

    • Familiarity with semiconductor foundry processes and photonic subassembly flows.
