Position: Head of Legal
Location: New York/ California

Key Responsibilities

Legal Strategy and Leadership

  • Act as the chief legal consultant to the North American leadership team, offering strategic counsel on legal, regulatory, and compliance issues across the U.S. and Canada.
  • Shape and execute the legal strategy for North America, ensuring it aligns with the company's global aims.
  • Head, mentor, and manage a team of legal professionals, cultivating a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Commercial and Transactional Matters

  • Supervise the creation, review, and negotiation of a broad spectrum of commercial contracts, including merchant, advertising, partnership agreements, vendor contracts, and terms of use.
  • Ensure all contracts are in line with the company's risk tolerance and business objectives.
  • Provide guidance on complex commercial and transactional issues, leveraging a solid grasp of contractual principles and industry best practices.

Litigation and Dispute Resolution

  • Spearhead the development and implementation of litigation strategies, including overseeing external counsel and working with internal teams to gather and prepare litigation materials.
  • Oversee internal compliance matters tied to litigation, including product, operational, and HR-related legal issues.
  • Efficiently manage and resolve disputes to mitigate legal and reputational risks.

Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management

  • Keep abreast of and analyze changes in U.S. and Canadian laws and regulations to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Design and implement compliance programs to reduce litigation risks and bolster the company's legal standing.
  • Regularly review and update key agreements, templates, and external policies to reduce legal exposure.

Government Investigations and Labor Matters

  • Lead the company's response to government investigations, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
  • Provide expert guidance on labor and employment matters, particularly in the food delivery sector.
  • Collaborate with HR and other departments to tackle labor-related legal challenges.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, including business development, operations, HR, and finance, to offer legal support and ensure alignment with company goals.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, providing proactive legal insights to aid decision-making.
  • Facilitate communication with global stakeholders, including those in Mandarin-speaking regions, to ensure alignment on legal and compliance matters.

Requirements
Education and Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar or eligibility to register as in-house counsel in the U.S.

Experience

  • A minimum of 8 years of legal experience, including in a leadership capacity overseeing legal teams.
  • Extensive experience in commercial and transactional law, litigation management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven track record of leading litigation and government investigations.
  • Experience in labor and employment law, especially in the food delivery or e-commerce sectors, is highly preferred.
  • In-house legal experience within a multinational corporation is strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing legal matters in Canada is a plus.

  • Excellent negotiation, drafting, and communication skills.
  • In-depth understanding of U.S. and Canadian laws and regulations, with the ability to navigate complex legal landscapes.
  • Strategic thinker with strong business acumen and the ability to balance legal risks with business objectives.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Mandarin to effectively communicate with global stakeholders.
