2016 Technology Market Trends Prediction

With Singapore being one of the world’s most recognised financial hubs, there is an abundance of roles for skilled technology professionals in the employment market. Large amounts of investment in technology across both the tech start-up and enterprise landscape have implicated that companies have money to spend on top IT talent.

The rise in technology start-up companies in Singapore has led to a steady demand for experienced Software Engineers, Product Managers and UX / UI Designers. Within this candidate driven market, technologists with skills in languages such as Python, Ruby on Rails, NodeJS, Golang, Rust, Scala, Clojure, Haskell, .Net and Java coupled with knowledge in Cloud (AWS, Azure) are in high demand. On the Big Data front, firms are seeking candidates with a background in the Hadoop ecosystem, alternative databases (NoSQL), machine learning and advanced statistical modelling. This area has seen top notch individuals with these skills commanding higher than average salary increments.

We’ve also seen a trend in Product Managers with experience from large multinational firms, being welcomed by small to mid-size Singaporean technology firms when applying for roles. In addition to this, Product Managers with experience in strategy, product road mapping and technical leadership are highly in demand. This is a critical area for product focussed technology and ecommerce companies in Singapore that has increased over the past few years. Talented professionals in the UX/UI design space are key hires for companies as better product designs and customer interactions are absolutely crucial to the success of a long lasting product.

In the banking and financial services space, hiring volumes remain healthy for talented developers in such object-oriented languages as Java, C# and C++. Furthermore, banks and other financial services players are taking an interest in software engineers from the tech start-up area with requirements for professionals with skills in Cloud, Big Data and functional programming languages experience such as Scala. As in the digital space, we are on the cusp of a wave with Big Data in the financial domain, as evidenced by the recent plethora of Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Architect, Data Analyst and Big Data Administrator roles. IT Security and IT Risk Experts with experience in data loss prevention, cybersecurity and the MAS Technology risk management guidelines are still highly sought-after within the banking and broader financial services industry.
